Can Auto Responders Work For You?

Auto Responder software programs are not new. These days they are commonplace if you’re used to working with emails or own a website. Many people are comfortable using Auto Response messages for personal purposes to say that you are “out of town” or that you “won’t be returning until after lunch” and so forth. They allow the sender to know that you received their email message. However, business-related Auto Response messages are those replied “canned messages” that are automatically sent notifying the sender that you’ve received their message. Most of these messages indicate that you will be getting back to them “in person” at a specified time and date. Many have information about a product or service that is supposed to “tease” the recipient into potentially buying said product or service from the sender of the Auto Response message.

Auto Responders can be very useful tools if you are operating a home-based business opportunity with less than normal hours. Your Auto Response can be set up to send prospects information such as a price list of your products and / or services, a Q&A list, a list of FAQ’s, specific content, or even testimonials. Also, it can be set up to send application and forms when the recipient needs to fill out before speaking to someone. This can save you a lot of time before talking to a potential prospect.

Getting started in sending Auto Response messages couldn’t be easier and is free in most cases. If you need to send only a single message to your potential prospects you can use the free Auto Responders that usually come as part of your web-hosting package. If you do not have a web site or want to use another source check out these two free web sites: FreeAutoBot.com and SendFree.com. Please note caution with these free Auto Responder programs. In most cases, your potential clients will instantly notice that you’re using a free service. This looks unprofessional and cheap in my opinion. You could quickly lose the traction and credibility you’d gained up to that point. If you are on a serious budget it is okay to start out with. However, upgrade as soon as you can to a paid software package such as a ‘light’ commercial version. Here are some examples: iContact.com, Interspire.com, Exclaimer.com, AWeber.com, ConstantContact.com or GetResponse.com.

Keep in mind, as with any email program that you select you’ll have to battle with spam filters, as well as with people who don’t like Auto Response messages. Make sure you know what your email communication needs are before rushing to get an Auto Responder program set up. They can be helpful but have some downsides too.

It’s worth noting that there is no substitute for live personal communication. In my opinion, when you receive a lead you should pick-up the telephone and call the prospect unless they request that you email them first. This is a more personal and professional approach. After all, don’t you want to meet the person on the other end?
