Working from Home Is on the Rise, Census Bureau Says

If you are a home-based small business owner, you’re in good company. In fact, at no time in history have there been more work-at-home business people than there are today. According to a report released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau, 13.4 million people work at home now. That’s an increase of 41% over the last decade.

It’s not just a trend, but a revolution…all courtesy of the computer, the Internet and all of today’s other ever-evolving technological advancements.

The most timely and comprehensive analysis of U.S. home-based business and professional activity in quite some time, the report shows that much of the increase in the number of work-from-home individuals has occurred since 2005, which saw an increase of roughly 2 million. Furthermore, it showed the median household income of home-based workers who only work from home was $74,000, while that of onsite workers was $65,600. Interestingly, workers who work off-site as well as at home had the highest median income at $96,300.

Other highlights include:

• Approximately one in ten individuals who worked exclusively from home were aged 65 or older.

• One-fourth of at-home workers were in management, business and financial occupations.

• Home-based workers in computer, engineering and science occupations increased by 69%.

• Metro areas in the Southeast, Southwest and West had the largest percentage of work-at-home individuals.
